Q: What do one of the most talented people on this planet (according to Quincy Jones), Rodgers & Hammerstein and Tom Hanks have in common?
A: They’ll all be making an appearance in Galway in some way, shape or form this week. Find out how with our event picks below…
(For more details on each event see our ‘What’s On’ Section)
The Andreas Varady Trio @ The Black Gate, 22nd Nov
On Friday night a young lad named Andreas Varady (who also happens to be an exceptional jazz guitarist) plays an exclusive gig with his trio in the Black Gate. Managed by American record-producer Quincy Jones, Varady is the youngest person ever to have performed in the famous Ronnie Scots Jazzclub in Soho, London.
Jones regards Varady as one of the most talented people in the world who “takes the music back to where it belongs”. Quincy Jones himself first shot to prominence in the 1950’s as jazz arranger and conductor so we believe he knows what he’s talking about.
Galway Game Jam 15 @ Portershed, 23rd/24th Nov
The Galway Game Jam is a two-day event held in the Portershed where attendees are invited to make a game or prototype in a super short timeframe. These include video games, board games, card games, and tabletop games. Games made will be played by everyone at the end of the event, so people can see what everyone has been working on and get a chance to play each other’s creations.
A theme will be announced by the organisers on Saturday morning, which will serve as a design pillar for the game. This sounds like a wonderful opportunity for game creators to collaborate, showcase innovation and network while having fun in the process.
The Musical Quiz @ The Black Gate, 26th Nov
On Tuesday evening lovers of musicals and table quizzes can rejoice as The Musicals Quiz takes place with questions relating to everything from Broadway to Hollywood. With audio rounds and participation in said rounds encouraged by the organizers this is going to be a fun evening. Bring a packet of Fishermen’s Friends with you to get those windpipes ready (I don’t even know if this is a thing).
Also, after two of the hardest days in the office, what better way to Let It Go than jogging your Memory in this fun event. And if your mate gets a bit drunk afterward you can Bring Him Home (#sorrynotsorry).
Festive Cocktail Workshop with Gabi @ Massimo, 26th Nov
Who doesn’t love a festive cocktail workshop? If you have never participated in one we highly recommend Gabi’s workshop in Massimo next Tuesday evening.
This will be a masterclass in shaking, blending and building classic cocktails such as espresso martinis and Winter Wonderland signatures drinks with one of the best cocktail makers in town. We know you might want to attend to learn new things and acquire knowledge but you also get to taste the delicious creations afterward.
Tom Hanksgiving Supper Club: BIG @ Pálás, 28th Nov
